How do I shoot self-portraits (boudoir photography…)?

I have a Canon T1i and would like to take some full-body shots (just lingerie) for my husband who is in Afghanistan right now. Obviously I don’t want someone else taking them, and I don’t have the money for (or trust in) a professional photographer.

How do I actually begin setting up the camera for that? What are some flattering angles? How do I make that sexy shadow-from-window-light look that still shows me, but will give contrast with shadows?

If you have ever done this type of photography (for yourself or others), what are some posing (or technical) tips you have?

Thank you! The more detail the better.

Some tips from the web:

Prior to the photo shoot, make sure to wear “clothing that fits loosely to insure the least amounts of marks on your body. These marks take time to go away and may waste your limited amount of time ”
and “Instead of a pullover, wear a button up shirt so that you won’t disturb the makeup and hair when you begin to change for your boudoir session.”

“Plan the lighting. In photography, lighting is everything and boudoir photography is no exception. Due to the nature of the shot, most sessions take place in private studios. If you don’t have studio lighting, you can use work lights on tripods, indirect window lighting and your camera flash. Arrange the lights so no shadows are apparent on the model’s face.”

“Prepare the background by hanging a plain colored sheet or canvas to block out distracting furniture, pictures and walls. Black and white are both good for the sensual effect they create. Make sure the model is not casting a shadow on the background by arranging one of the lights behind her, shining directly on the background.” – not sure if this is necessary in your case as the familiarity of your home may be desirable. It depends on whether you’re going for the fantasy idea or the concept of what’s waiting at home.

“ather props before you begin taking photos. You may want a sturdy folding table, covered with a sheet or throw that matches the background, allowing the model to recline. Consider adding soft throws, feather boas and other items that suggest intimacy for a glamour photograph.”

“an oversized man’s button-up shirt can also be sexy”

“more is often less. Keep poses modest, not sprawled out with legs open. A slight turn of the head and shoulder can create a very intimate look without being blatant. The goal is to create a sensual portrait without becoming garish and crude. Models do not have to be lying down nor does a bed necessarily have to be the prop. A relaxed pose on a chaise lounge is very appropriate for boudoir photography. Experiment with angles similar to those you would see if standing close to the subject and speaking to her.”
